Week 9 Blog

Over the weekend, I braved a few winter storms to travel to Denver for a concert. While we didn't have much time to stop and get cool pictures (I really wanted to stop in RMNP, but time was not on our side both getting there and getting back!) I thought it would be a good editing exercise to edit some of the photos I took during the concert using the Photoshop Express app.

All photos were taken on a Samsung Galaxy S9 using default camera and edited using Photoshop Express.

I used the dehaze tool on this to cut out some of the haze created by the fog machines (and the legal substances in Colorado) and warmed up the temperature to bring out some of the yellows and greens in the fog. I want to figure out how to make the drummer not look as yellow.

I cropped out a lot of the bottom of this picture because we were four rows back so there were a lot of hands up during this song. I used the dehaze tool again and brought the white balance to a filter matching the light in the Pepsi Center a little more. I also tried to make the colors not as dramatic, but with the Express app I wasn't able to find a tool that could do what I wanted to do with the picture.

I didn't crop heads out of this shot because I love the yellow platform and how it stands out from the red background. I wish this was a cleaner shot but I found it was really hard to get clear shots during a concert, especially being in the pit and just using my smartphone. I wish I could have been in front of the barricades with a canon, but I still think this is a cool shot.

I know these pics aren't nature-related, but I think they were cool to use and test the Photoshop Express app a little more. I don't plan on attending any major concerts this weekend, so I'm hoping to get out and get some nature shots to test the Express app in a way more related to this course.

Week 8 Blog

Since we are apparently doing a share and critique today, my normal weekly blog will be short.

Over fall break I tried to get out and shoot. Since I remain unfamiliar with my camera and remain unable to take a decent photograph with it I only took my smartphone out with me. Here is one of the photos I took.

I took this photo in the heights near MetraPark.

Week 7 Blog

Taken on a Samsung Galaxy S9 using Open Camera. The area is the rest area between Hysham, MT and Billings, MT. Around 10 a.m. October 14, 2019.

Final HDR composite: 1/3200 s, f/1.5, ISO50

Edited using Microsoft Photos

I don't know the exact lingo for all of it because it's not photoshop or whatever but I increased the light, brought the color and clarity up, and added a little bit of vignette to make it look a little more dramatic.

Week 6 Blog

Taken on a Samsung Galaxy S9 with Open Camera application which takes multiple exposures at once using HDR

Too dark: 1/8000s f/1.5 ISO100

 Too light: 1/5000s f/1.5 ISO100

Still not there: 1/1250s f/1.5 ISO100

HDR composite: ISO 100 1/5000 s f/1.5

I'm not the biggest fan of this camera app but it works when I don't have a DSLR with me and find a cool scene.

Week 5 Blog

This week I found this video from a vlogger named Peter McKinnon whose photography videos I linked to a few weeks ago. I'm hoping to use these tips when working with Lightroom, which I hope is soon. I think he breaks the process down in an easy to understand way, but the video is a little lengthy.

Week 4 Blog

This week I did some messing around to pictures I took a few weeks ago. I have no idea what I'm doing and wish we could do more stuff with photography during class, but with the student art show coming up I guess we are on our own.

This is before editing

And after. I just used the editing program on my PC. It doesn't have all the fancy terms like actual photoshop does but I enhanced the clarity and brightened the colors as well as darkened the lighting a little bit.
